Washington, DC 4th May 2020 – Infectious disease scientist, Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan has said that “Liberia’s extremely high case fatality rate of 10-11% is unrealistic and questionable since these numbers come from COVID-19 testing of dead bodies that may not have haboured the virus several hours or days after a person was pronounced dead.”
The Liberian scientist raised the concerns on 29th April 2020 as he analyzed Liberia’s COVID-19 Pandemic data on Monrovia’s OK FM 99.5 “The Conversation” with Julius Jeh. Liberia seems to have the highest case fatality rate in the West African sub-region.

Top US diplomat again says China to blame
By BBC News
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has blamed China for the severity of the coronavirus outbreak, telling ABC News that the country “had the opportunity to prevent all of the calamity that has befallen the world” but tried to “conceal and hide and confuse” information.
The Trump administration has in recent weeks increasingly pointed the finger at China, in what BBC correspondent Barbara Plett Usher wrote recently was a co-ordinated effort to reframe Trump's handling of the pandemic ahead of November's election.
When asked about an unproven theory that the virus was manmade - a notion President Donald Trump has also repeatedly suggested - Pompeo said he did not disbelieve the theory, claiming “the best experts so far seem to think it was manmade”.
But last week, the US intelligence community stated that it agreed with a scientific consensus that the virus was not manmade or modified.
When asked about that assessment live on the show, Pompeo reversed course, saying he agreed with the intelligence analysis and had “no reason to doubt” its accuracy.
The secretary later said he couldn’t answer whether the virus was intentionally or accidentally released as “the Chinese Communist Party has refused to cooperate with world health experts”.

Explainer: why COVID-19 provides a lesson for Africa to fund social assistance
African countries have responded swiftly to the threat of COVID-19 by implementing various measures to contain its spread. Most of the continent is in lockdown or under curfew, or a combination of both.
Unfortunately, these measures have resulted in the loss of livelihoods for many people, particularly in the informal sector. An estimated 85.5% of workers across the continent work in the informal sector.

A novel idea: integrating urban and rural safety nets in Africa during the pandemic
In countries across Africa, the public health restrictions imposed to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic have thrown many people out of work. Cities face the risk of widespread hunger, with the collapse of urban incomes and disruptions in food supply chains . And where there are government-run relief programs , many have only reached a fraction of the people who have lost their incomes.
Most African countries are experiencing rapid urbanisation. But this trend can temporarily slow or even reverse during civil war or economic crisis . This is due to the fact that in crisis, as food prices rise and incomes fall, many people turn to farming to support themselves. Migration to rural areas to access agricultural land thus provides an important type of informal safety net .
