Cameroon midfilder Geremi Njitap has told Ghanaians not to expect too much from back-to-fitness Michael Essien in Sunday's 2010 combined qualifying opener against Benin at the Baba Yara Stadium.

The 30-year-old played with Essien at Chelsea for two seasons before moving to Newcastle in 2007.

Njitap believes Essien might have impressed in the four matches he has played on his retrun from injury but pleads that high expectations are not set for him.

"I hope the people know that he's recovering and should not expect too much from him. He's a good player but he has not played for a long time so be patient with him," Njitap told Ghanasoccernet.

" I am watching his matches and you can see that he's now recovering from the injury but he can play but not like the first okay."

Essien spent six months on the sidelines after tearing a knee ligament on international duty in the world cup qualifiers.

Njitap is in Accra for the Indomitable Lions' opner against Togo in Accra.
