COVID-19: Global Fund Urged To Support Gov'ts With More Funds To Fight Spread

Four Non-Governmental Organizations are passionately calling for more financial support from the Global Fund and the private sector, especially oil and gas, mining, pharmaceutical, automobile companies and individual philanthropists to support world leaders’ effort in fighting against COVID-19 pandemic.

The four organizations are Global Coalition Against Infectious Diseases (GCAID), World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) Business Coalition Ghana, Indigenous Women Empowerment Network (IWEN) and Global Media Foundation (GLOMEF).

In a statement issued in Accra in support of the National Day of Fasting and Prayers sanctioned by the President of Ghana, the National Coordinator of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) Business Coalition Ghana, Mr. Raphael Godlove Ahenu said the fight against COVID-19 required more financial support for the affected and even non-affected nations to overcome the global crisis.

The statement indicated that the severity of COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts on the global health systems, economies, destruction of lives especially in Europe, America, China and many other developing nations are very worrying, and required the support of all.

It called on citizens across the globe to adhere to and comply with the World Health Organization, Health Ministries and governments’ declaration of emergency and precautionary measures.

The statement commended the Government of Ghana for backing the COVID-19 fight with the declaration of the National Day of Fasting and Prayers for spiritual intervention.

It however observed that Ghana could have recorded fewer cases of COVID-19 if the Government had closed down all borders, entry points and stopped all flights from entering the country early enough.

The statement revealed that the four NGOs will launch a campaign to raise at least $200,000 to purchase food items to support vulnerable and marginalized people if the proposed lockdown of the country by the Ghana Medical Association and other NGOs is approved by the Government.

It appealed to the NGOs and CSOs to critically intensify their community engagement and help control the spread of misinformation about COVID-19, especially in the rural areas.
