I can't be able to buy a dress with GHAMRO's money — Stephanie Benson

Ghanaian UK based Jazz singer Stephanie Benson has charged the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) to address all outstanding amendments with musicians in terms of royalties’ payment.

In an interview last week, she stated that she has simply refused to sign on to the revenue collection body because of how meager their royalties are.

According to her, money from GHAMRO may not be able to buy her a dress.

“I don’t bother and that’s a little ridiculous for me to say considering I’m an artist, but I have no control over how things are done here, in that way,” she stated.

Comparing the royalties system in Ghana and that of the UK, she revealed that one of her songs ‘Good Feeling’ makes her a little more money after she sold it to a US company that used some parts of it in a film.

“That makes me a little bit of money. I put a song out in the UK called ‘Hanging on’ and that made me more money in a day than anything I’ve ever had.”

She said it would help artiste immensely if GHAMRO’s operations improved.

Stressing on the inabilities of GHAMRO, she added that her sister, singer Akosua Agyepong has been fighting so desperately to get the system up and working.

“Because Akos again very deservingly she’s had some great hits but she doesn’t even get any kind of royalties, I think it needs to be sorted out,” Stephanie Benson said.
