As the sudden death of Ferdinand Ayim, the special assistant to the Minister of Tourism and Modernization of the Capital City, Mr. Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, still remains fresh in the minds of not only New Patriotic Party (NPP) members but also the nation as whole, the NPP has again been hit with another tragedy.
This time round, it is the death of the Northern Regional chairman of the NPP, Alhaji C.O.P, who fought gallantly to retain his position in the 2005 northern regional congress of the party; a post he held until his untimely death in the early hours of yesterday.
The heart breaking news of the NPP loyalist has put the 'elephant family', including its General Secretary, Nana Ohene Ntow, in a sombre mood. He said the death of C.OP has indeed created a vacuum for both the regional and national secretariats of the party because he was a pillar and a force to reckon with. Alhaji C.O.P, who was reported to have suffered from mile stroke, was pronounced dead yesterday at the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital.
Ohene Ntow expressed shocked at the chairman's call to eternity, stating, "He was a pillar for the party. His death was a shock to us. Indeed, nobody can underestimate his loyalty to the party. It was a big blow to the party." The expressions of the face of the party's chief scribe showed some despondency. According to him, by the traditions of the Moslems, the deceased would be handed over to the family for burial and hinted that in the absence of the deceased, the vice regional chairman would be acting until further notice.
It would be recalled that in the heat of the chairmanship race of the NPP in the Northern region, the region was divide between the lines of Mr. Bugri Naabu and that of the deceased. Bugri Naabu was earlier disqualified but after further consultations, he was asked to contest but lost massively to the deceased.
The deceased during the Tamale Central by-election was missing in action due to ill health. C.O.P, in his last interaction with this paper, when it sought his views on the succession theory of the NPP, had declined to comment, saying that because of his indisposition, he was not conversant with the current unfolding political events.
