The University of Ghana has added its voice to the tributes that have poured in for the former United Nations chief, Kofi Annan.

The renowned Ghanaian diplomat reportedly passed away, Saturday after a short illness. He was 80.

Kofi Annan served as the Chancellor of the University of Ghana from 2008 until 2018 where he was succeeded by Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse.

"The University of Ghana and the world have indeed lost a distinguished leader who was incomparable in all respects. He demonstrated true servant and selfless leadership, always wishing the best for his nation and the world. A true peacemaker he was," a statement released by the university said.

The statement described Mr Annan as “a man of principle and gentle disposition”.

His funeral arrangements will be released after a meeting with the Asantehene , Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and his family.

University of Ghana has been informed of the passing away of Mr. Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations and our former Chancellor. The University is deeply saddened by this news.

The Principal Officers of the University, namely, Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse, Chancellor, Prof. Yaw Twumasi, Chairman of Council and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, have all expressed shock at his death.

Speaking on behalf of the University, the Vice-Chancellor, said, "The University of Ghana and the world have indeed lost a distinguished leader who was incomparable in all respects. He demonstrated true servant and selfless leadership, always wishing the best for his nation and the world. A true peacemaker he was".

Mr. Annan, who was Chancellor of the University of Ghana from 2008, ended his tenure at the end of July, 2018.

At the recent investiture ceremony of Mr. Annan's successor, The President of the Republic of Ghana described Mr. Kofi Annan as "one of Ghana’s most illustrious sons under whose stewardship the University attained the rank as one of the best universities in West Africa".

As Chancellor, Mr. Kofi Annan was instrumental in attracting numerous funding sources to the university especially in the areas of agricultural research and ICT development. The former Chancellor, will be remembered as a man of principle and gentle disposition.

The University mourns with the family and shall cling to the memory of his life, his avowed passion for the University, and his legacy.

Our hearts go out to his devoted wife, Nane, his children, family, colleagues and friends.
