African swine fever killed over 150 pigs at koforidua near Duayaw-Nkwanta in the Tano North district of the Brong Ahafo region.

Some farmers said their pigs have in the past two weeks been dying as a result of the swine flu, which has been a major worry to them.

In an interview with Sunyani based radio Metro 90.5FM, they said "we saw the disease on our pigs when we find out that some of our pigs have loss of appetite, loss weight, fluid and some physical disease on them (pigs)".

They appealed to government to as a matter of urgency help them combat African Swine Flu that has killed over 150 Pigs in the area.

The farmers therefore called on Ministry of Food and Agriculture to come to their aid with drugs which will help to prevent further spread of the virus in their farms.

According to them, they have informed district veterinary officers, but they told them there is no vaccine to protect against it, so they should kill any infected pig and then clean and disinfect the place," this makes us worried as killing is the only solution" they stated.

Meanwhile some pork sellers, in the Sunyani municipality also said sales have dropped drastically due to the virus.

“we are appealing to government and stakeholders to curb the situation for us if not, we will be jobless. This is what we have been selling for years, something must be done about it fast” they stated.

A woman who refused to mentioned her name said, she used to make an average of GHC 600 every night but now she makes between GHC 200 and GHC 300 every night.

"Government must take serious action on this swine fever in order to save our businesses" she said.
