Uefa clear clash between Leipzig and Atletico Madrid despite coronavirus cases

European football's governing body, Uefa, on Monday gave the all-clear for the Champions League match between RB Leipzig and Atletico Madrid despite two positive tests for coronavirus at the Spanish club.

Atletico reported two individuals had tested positive for the disease as Diego Simeone's men prepared for the quarter-final on 13 August against the German outfit at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon.

The club did not say whether the positive tests concerned players, coaching staff or officials. “The two individuals who tested positive are self-isolating in their respective homes,” Atletico added in a statement.

Atletico, who finished the 2019/20 La Liga season in third place, said a fresh round of tests carried out on the squad and backroom staff on Monday had revealed no further coronavirus infections.

A Uefa spokesman said on Monday "The match is planned to be played as scheduled."

Revamp
Uefa reconfigured the final phases of its most prestigious club competition after European leagues were suspended in March as governments attempted to stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

A series of one-off matches in a mini-tournament in Lisbon will determine the 2020 champions.

The quarter-finals start on 12 August when the Italian side Atalanta take on Paris Saint-Germain. Barcelona face Bayern Munich on 14 August while Lyon take on Manchester City on 15 August.

The final will take place on 23 August at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon.
