Tips To Keep Your Jewelry Safe

Oftentimes, we let the criminal walk right in the door and don’t even realizing we’re putting our valuables at risk.

mitted by people we already know – your gardener, nanny, babysitter, your children’s friends and even your beloved household pet. We have tips that will go a long way in keeping jewelry safe at home.

1. Never leave a key for anyone.
Don’t leave a key for a repairman to use to enter your home. If you can’t be home during the repair time, reschedule the appointment or get a trusted family member or friend to be home during the service call. Also avoid leaving spare keys in obvious hiding spots, like under a rock or door mat.

2. Keep jewelry out of sight.
When you know someone is coming over, whether to babysit, clean your home or make a repair, don’t leave jewelry lying around the house. Keep your collection in a locked location in your home, such as a safe, to prevent theft, as well as potential loss or damage if you’re having work done in your home.

3. Be aware of what’s happening.
Pay attention when workers are in your home so you know where they are and what they’re doing. If your kids have friends over, make sure they know which areas are off limits. Keep doors closed to rooms where you don’t want visitors to be.

4. Seek references.
Whenever possible, hire for in-home services from people you know and trust. If you do not personally know someone who can handle the repair/service, ask for a recommendation from a friend or family member. Call the Better Business Bureau to find out more about the company.

5. Be mindful of family, friends and pets.
Sometimes the ones closest to you are the ones to watch most closely. Take extra safety precautions while hosting houseguests, including your children’s friends, or if you have young children who like to play dress-up with Mom’s jewels.
