Bilal Yussif wins Supreme African Documentary Filmmaker of the Year at SDTA awards

Ghanaian-born filmmaker Bilal Yussif has joined a prestigious list of filmmakers who have been recognized by the global and prestigious Supreme Dynamic Talent Academy Awards(SDTA Awards)

He won the Supreme African documentary filmmaker of the year 2023 ahead of other filmmakers at the 3rd edition of SDTA awards ceremony which took place on the 20th of December 2023 at the plush La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra-Ghana.

While he may be a rising star in filmmaking, Bilal Yussif has the prestigious honor of being the first documentary filmmaker to be awarded Supreme African Documentary Filmmaker of the Year at Supreme Dynamic Talent Academy Awards.

This award category is awarded to an African documentary filmmaker who has made supreme achievements in documentary filmmaking and has evinced supremacy through documentary films by capturing real-life events and narratives, from distressing tales of human endurance to insightful explorations of societal issues, offering audiences a glimpse into authentic stories that both educate and entertain, thereby represents the Supremacy of documentary filmmaking.

Bilal Yussif, who told the story of ‘The Menace to Mother Nature in Pursuit of Wealth, a 2023 documentary, which seeks to highlight and depict the negative effects of illegal artisanal small scale mining in Ghana, popularly known as ‘galamsey’ on water bodies, vegetation, forest, climate change and human life at large with special emphasis on children, who are the future of every nation, has become the first Ghanaian and the first person ever to win the Supreme African Documentary Filmmaker award.

The Menace to Mother Nature in Pursuit of Wealth, a striking documentary that evokes a wave of emotions by Bilal was also nominated at the 16th edition of the Belize international film festival in the united states early last year but it can be said that, Bilal Yussif ‘s hard work has finally paid off, as he receives his first ever award as a filmmaker, at the Global & Prestigious SDTA Awards.

In his acceptance speech, Bilal Yussif said “When I decided to work on this film, I had just wanted to shine light, expose and convey the destructiveness caused by the Galamsey and the inhumanity of those behind this menace in the society, which is causing great harm in the society. Though I had ambition for the film from the outset, but never allowed myself to dream that it would screen at the world's leading awards from Africa, celebrating the Global Supremacy of Talent and Creativity. To be awarded at SDTA Awards is simply a dream come true, myself and my talent are definitely having a moment and God willing, I will be back next Year".
