The Ashanti regional office of the Ghana Tourist Authority has awarded 32 members in the tourist industry at the 9th edition of the regional awards event held in Kumasi yesterday.

The ceremony which high the theme “ Harnessing our Tourism Resources for National Development” , aiming to encourage the pursuit of excellence by tourist plant owners, management and workers, also to motivate corporate bodies and individuals to support the development of tourism , as well as pay tribute to those establishments which provide outstanding facilities and quality services.

The Ashanti regional manager of the Ghana Tourist Authority Mr. Ekow Sampson in his remarks said, the event which started over 20 years ago has impacted positively on the standard of facility and services in the region.

He state that, there has been a remarkable increase in the provision of quality hotels and restaurants, car and rental establishment, fast food joints, traditional chop bars and night clubs in the region.

Analyzing his statistics, Mr. Elow stressed that in 1995, the total number of unit's hotels in the region was one thousand, seven hundred and eleven with corresponding room for one thousand, seven hundred and eleven.

Also, in 2014 the total units of hotels have increased rapidly to five hundred and three with corresponding room of seven thousand nine hundred and thirty eight which represent 453% growth rate of hotels and 464% in room, between 1995 to 2014.

The manager also state that, a visit to the Kumasi Zoo has recorded significant increased in domestic tourist arrivals from 57,721 with corresponding revenue of Ghc 90,003.00 in the year 2010 to 67,544 accruing a revenue of Ghc 137,101.00 in 2013.

Mr. Ekow appealed to curators and managers of tourists site to provide discount for tourist clubs, school children in primary, SHS, Tertiary institutions so that they could patronize our attraction site in the country.

The Ashanti regional minister Hon. Samuel Sarpong speaking at the ceremony edged distinguished award winners greater reward comes through continuous improvement and continuous improvement comes through hard working.

He also encouraged those who did not receive award not to loose hope but continue to work hard and would be recognize one day.

He said, government will keep supporting the tourism authority to help boost the economy of the country.
