By Yaw Adu-Gyamfi

Embedded Systems Training-KNUST- is a 10 day (24th Sept- 3rd Oct 2012) hands– on class designed to teach students and entrepreneurs how to program PIC microcontroller in both assembly language and C/C++. The classes equally expose students to software development techniques for embedded systems. In the course of the class, students will be required to write programs to control LEDs, seven segments displays, LCD, build a digital clock, piano, keypad etc. Students and entrepreneurs will equally be introduced to USART/UART and USB communication protocol. Day 9-10 will be devoted to general hacking highlighting questions on old projects, business aspects of embedded systems and a network session.

What is an embedded system?
An embedded system is a computer system designed for specific control functions within a larger system, often with real-time computing constraints. It is embedded as part of a complete device often including hardware and mechanical parts. By contrast, a general-purpose computer, such as a personal computer (PC), is designed to be flexible and to meet a wide range of end-user needs. Embedded systems control many devices in common use today.

Embedded systems span all aspects of modern life and there are many examples of their use. Telecommunications systems employ numerous embedded systems from telephone switches for the network to mobile phones at the end-user. Computer networking uses dedicated routers and network bridges to route data. Consumer electronics include personal digital assistants (PDAs), mp3 players, mobile phones, videogame consoles, digital cameras, DVD players, GPS receivers, and printers. Many household appliances, such as microwave ovens, washing machines and dishwashers, include embedded systems to provide flexibility, efficiency and features.

The Kumasi Center for Lifelong Learning-KCLL is a youth serving company limited by guarantee headquartered in Kumasi, Ghana. Kumasi Center facilitates skills training, promotes entrepreneurship and undertakes research and policy advocacy. The organization is managed by a team of three co-founders with a combined work experience of over 25 years and has trained 400+ entrepreneurs to acquire technology and business skills from 2010 till date. This years' embedded systems training will be held at the KwameNkrumah University of Science and Technology-KNUST in collaboration with Mobile Friday that combines teams of talented ICT developers, faculty members, and business school students from the public and private universities to identify challenges and opportunities, create appropriate projects, and launch successful companies for economic growth and sustainable jobs in Ghana. The organization has as one of its objectives to raise -via grant and revenue- at least US$1 million to create Start-up Fund for technology related businesses.
