Robert Sobotta, director of the Goethe Institut in Accra, has presented an amount of GH¢2,050.00 to Kinder Paradise, an orphanage located in Prampram, a coastal town near the port city of Tema.

The amount was realized from gate proceeds from a burger highlife concert at the Alliance Française that formed part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the Goethe-Institut in Accra.

The concert, which featured Pat Thomas, Charles Amoah, George Darko, Lee Duodu, Nana Yaa, Samini and other musicians, showcased burger highlife, a brand of music that rocked Ghana towards the end of the 20th century.

Burger Highlife is a special music style created in Germany by Ghanaian musicians who immigrated to Germany in the mid and late 1970s. They employed Ghanaian highlife and successfully fused it with other genres, thereby creating a crossover mixture of highlife, disco and funk music.

Burger Highlife was born when Ghanaian musicians in Germany started collaborating with German musicians and producers. Several experiments and improvisations resulted in the crossover music style – a dramatic blend of highlife, disco and funk.

Presenting the amount, Sobotta, who also handed over footballs, water bottles and other souvenirs from MTN, said the Institut was impressed with the activities of Kinder Paradise, and urged them to continue with the good work they were doing for the young people of Ghana, who will grow up to be future leaders.

He urged pupils and students to focus on their academic work, adding that they had a bright chance of contributing their quota to Ghana and society in general through hard work and self-discipline.

Kinder Paradise, which was founded by Silke Roesner, a German national in 1997, has facilities in Prampram and Accra. With support from some German organizations, over 100 kids are currently being supported at Kinder Paradise and other day care centres in Accra.
