Ghanaian-American Filmmaker gets 2017 African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) nomination

Award-winning producer Akosua Adoma Owusu’s latest film On Monday of Last Week is one of eight nominated for Best Short Film from the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).

Based on the short story by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie of the same name, On Monday of Last Week tells the complicated story of a Nigerian woman named Kamara, who is hired by Neil and his wife, Tracy, an artist, to help care for their young child. Kamara soon realizes that she wants to be Tracy’s muse, and begins to question her pre-conceived notions of identity, attraction and beauty.

The internationally acclaimed cast of On Monday of Last Week includes Chinasa Ogbuagu (“The Following”), Karyn Parsons (best remembered for her role on “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air”), Peter Rini (“Orange is the New Black”), Jill Shackner (“The Americans”), and Farouk James Prempeh, who is making his acting debut.

The AMAA nominations were announced May 16th and the forthcoming event date is July 15th in Lagos, Nigeria.

On Monday of Last Week is directed and produced by Owusu and Obibini Pictures, LLC - a company that has produced award-winning films including "Kwaku Ananse," which won the 2013 African Movie Academy Award for Best Short Film. Upcoming feature productions include “Black Sunshine” and “Save the Rex” a part-real life, part-fictionalized feature film about Owusu’s campaign to restore Accra’s historic Rex cinema.

When asked about the film’s nomination, Owusu said that she was “humbled and grateful for the opportunity to translate Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s short story onto film.”

“My previous films have been inspired by folk stories,” she continued, “so I was honored to adapt this compelling work of literature from a contemporary African writer and render it in my film style. Adichie’s short story is very much in line with themes I've explored in previous works – especially ideas of conventional beauty and identity.”

Celebrated Ghanaian rapper, M.anifest, scored the film production with frequent collaborator Drvmroll and Grammy-nominated French duo Les Nubians composed original music for the On Monday of Last Week soundtrack.
