13 projects completed at various garrisons

Kumasi, Jan. 23, GNA - A total of 13 projects have been completed at the cost of 29.1 billion cedis in various garrisons in the country. Dr. Kwame Addo-Kufuor, Minister of Defence who announced this said 33 of such projects were still under construction, and work on them have so far cost about 26.6 billion cedis.

This notwithstanding, the Defence Minister said 18 barracks within most of the garrisons have also benefited from rehabilitation of their infrastructure estimated at a cost of 6.4 billion cedis. Dr. Addo-Kufuor made the announcement during a durbar with troops of the Four Garrison troops in Kumasi on Monday, as part of his one-day tour of the garrison, to enable him interact with the troops and find out their problems and help address them.

He earlier inspected a Guard of Honour mounted by the Four Garrison at the Airport and inspected a number of projects at the garrison, and also later paid a courtesy call on Mr. S.K. Boafo, Ashanti Regional Minister at his office.

The Minister's tour would take him on Tuesday to Sunyani in the Brong-Ahafo, and to Tamale in the Northern region on Wednesday, all part of the Northern Command of the MOD.

Dr. Addo-Kufuor also used the occasion to announce that to enhance and bring improvement into the accommodation sector of the MOD, Cabinet had approved of a special loan of 10 million US Dollars. The Minister said part of the loan facility would be injected into works for the completion of some 30 buildings which were being constructed at the Iddris barracks at the Four Garrison, but abandoned 30 years ago.

He made it clear that until those 30 housing projects and all other on-going projects were completed in the area, no new project would be started again in the Garrison.

Dr. Ado-Kufuor expressed concern about the slow pave of works by some contractors, and the poor road network at the garrison and gave the assurance that the Ministry would liaise with all the relevant Ministries and Agencies to bring sanity in the form of development to bear on the garrison.

The Minister said despite the difficulties, the MOD had made a lot of impact and achievements within the past five years, and these included initiating the completion of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, the Burma Camp Computer Centre and Commercial Complex and the new Out-Patient-Department (OPD) Block of the 37 Military Hospital among others

During his courtesy call on the Regional Minister, Dr. Addo-Kufuor appealed to the Minister to use his good offices to get the Urban Roads Department to work on the poor roads at the Four Garrison. Mr. Boafo assured the Minister of Defence that he has already given attention to rehabilitation of the road at the Garrison and commended the Minister of Defence for recently assisting the region with patrol vehicles to undertake the "Operation calm life" The Regional Minister said the stride by the Defence Minister had helped in drastically reducing the crime wave in Kumasi and the region.
