Hurray! Wesley Girls High School Is 15 Years

Accra, Oct. 9, GNA — The Methodist Church, Ghana is to open more girls' schools in the country to offer quality education to the girl-child.

This would also help to ease the congestion and the pressure at the Wesley Girls High School at Cape Coast and Kumasi.

The Right Reverend Samuel Kofi Osabutey, Bishop of Accra, disclosed this at the launch of the 15th Anniversary Celebration of the Accra Wesley Girls High School.

The celebration is on the theme: ''Educating the Girl-Child to Respond to the Changing Needs of the Society''.

Some of the activities lined up include Agape Day, Gospel Rock Show, Float/Awareness Walk, Homecoming, Anniversary Day, and Thanksgiving Service.

Rt. Rev. Osabutey said the Church, founded in 1835, had been at the forefront of education, opening more schools including Mfantsipim, which had trained high calibre individuals most of who occupied high positions in government.

He called for support for the training of girls since they have the potential to change the world ''both as the empowered girls of today and as tomorrow's workers, mothers, mentors, household heads and political leaders.''

Mrs Cynthia Esibrey-Annan, the Headmistress of the School, said the school, which was started as a private second cycle with 12 girls, now had a student population of 1,616.

She said the School was previously using three classrooms but with the support of the Parent-Teacher Association it could boast of two-storey buildings and four pavilions.

Mrs Esibrey-Annan urged them to take their studies seriously to enable them to achieve their future aspirations.
