Female students at Nkwanta Senior High School (SHS) in the Volta Region are at a high risk of contracting infectious diseases, especially candidiasis, due to the school’s insanitary bathroom facilities.
The over 700 female students of the school located in the Nkwanta South Municipality are at risk of contracting the infections.
The toilet facility, a 12-seatter dilapidated structure, for instance, is full to the brim.
The students have described the situation as frustrating and have subsequently called for urgent action.
Facilities at the school are deplorable
A housemistress, Gifty Nyankong Npeaniason, told Joy News most of the students have had to be treated for candidiasis at some point during their stay in the school.
Headmaster of the school, Paul Nyakong Boafo, has also told Joy News that apart from the poor sanitation issues, classes and dormitories are also congested, a situation that is hampering effective teaching and learning.
The MCE, John Thusun, who confessed knowing about the situation, has meanwhile assured students of government’s commitment to making sure that new classrooms are built for the school along with proper bathroom facilities.
