Kumasi, June 01, GNA - The National House of Chiefs (NHC) has condemned the horrific and shameful murder of Army Captain, Maxwell Adam Mahama at Diaso, near Denkyira Obuasi.

The chiefs, are however counselling calm and restraint as the security agencies undertake thorough investigations into the despicable act.

This was contained in a press statement issued in Kumasi and signed by Mr. Stephen Owusu, Public Relations Officer of the House.

It expressed concern about the increasing resort, with impunity, to the administration of instant justice on suspects, many of whom turn out to be innocent people.

The House reminded everybody that taking the law into their own hands - visiting brutal acts on defenceless fellow human beings was not the civilized way of doing things.

They should at all times allow the state security agencies to act 'in our collective interest'.

'The frequency of lawless behaviour, the impunity with which such behaviours are carried out and the fact that most of the culprits escape punishment seem to portray lawless behaviour as part of our way of life.'

It added that there had been attacks on state institutions and personnel, 'and we have even witnessed attacks on police stations'.

The chiefs blamed the lack of enforcement of the law for what was happening and said the killing of Capt. Mahama was a wake-up call, 'and we must act before the situation gets out of hand'.

The statement urged the security agencies to stringently enforce the law to prevent the country from sliding into anarchy.

The chiefs conveyed heartfelt condolences to the family of the army officer and prayed that 'God will give them the strength and fortitude to bear the pain of the untimely loss of their beloved'.
