Los Angeles (AFP) - The United States will take on old rivals Ghana in a friendly international on July 1 as they build-up to the CONCACAF Gold Cup, it was confirmed Monday.

US Soccer said in a statement the match would take place at the Pratt & Whitney Stadium in East Hartford, Connecticut.

"Ghana is certainly a team that brings different challenges, and it's the type of competition we need as we continue to develop our program," US head coach Bruce Arena said in a statement.

"Winning the Gold Cup is one of our priorities in 2017, so this is an important opportunity. We've always had great support in Hartford, and look forward to more of the same this summer."

The US and Ghana have become the best of enemies on the World Cup stage, meeting at the last three tournaments dating back to 2006.

The Ghanaians won an extra-time thriller 2-1 to advance in the last 16 of the 2010 World Cup.

The Americans then exacted revenge at the 2014 finals in Brazil, winning their group game 2-1 to advance from the Group of Death behind eventual winners Germany.
