Accra, April 21, GNA - The Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX) Project has assured members of aggregator groups that no group would lose its business in the commodity value chain when the Exchange fully becomes operational.

In separate sensitisation sessions with 'Women Can', in Tema and Kumasi, Mr Richard Ankrah, the Membership Manager of the GCX Project, said the existence of a National Commodity Exchange (GCX) will not take their sources of livelihood away.

The Exchange, he said, would rather provide them with a ready, orderly and transparent trading platform to facilitate trade by easily connecting buyers and sellers.

'Women Can', is an association of female aggregators who engage in spot trading in cashew, peanuts, maize, rice and soya bean.

A statement signed by Nii Lamkai Lawson, Communications Manager of GCX Project and copied to the Ghana News Agency said, 'the GCX operational model would present numerous opportunities for aggregators to continue to execute their roles in the value chain business '.

'GCX would initially commence trading in maize, soya and paddy rice in its first year of operations and bring on board other commodities as the Exchange expands ', Mr Ankrah told the aggregators.

Madam Kate Dugan, the President of the Association, said members were committed to maintain the relationship with GCX and ensure that they were updated regularly to preserve their active involvement in the pursuit to transform Ghana's economy while creating prosperity for all in the commodity value chain.

She urged the GCX to consider adding peanut and cashew to the commodities to be traded when operational, a concern Mr Ankrah noted would be considered in the next phase during the contract design for new commodities for the GCX.

The sensitization programme was part of the awareness campaign undertaken by the GCX Project to share information with prospective members on available opportunities when the Exchange is established.

The GCX Project is a Public-Private-Partnership initiative designed to transform Ghana's agricultural sector through the establishment of the first modern commodity exchange in the country. It is the first of its kind in the West Africa Sub Region and expected to become operational by late 2016.

The GCX would be a national multi-commodity exchange to provide market integrity by guaranteeing the product grade and quantity; and operating a system of clearing and settling of contracts on a daily basis.
