Accra, Sept. 22, GNA - Malaria accounts for 22 percent of death among children under five years whilst it is also responsible for one in four global child death, according to the UN International Children Education Fund.

A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency from the UNICEF local office in Ghana said current survey figures showed that only 2 percent of pregnant women and 14 percent of children under the age five slept under treated insecticide nets across the country.

The statement said the Ghana Health Service (GHS), in collaboration with UNICEF and the Local Government authorities has made some progress in the Upper East Region where about 20 per cent of children under five are using insecticide treated nets.

It said support extended by the Japanese Government to UNICEF would enable the purchase and distribution of 250,000 nets over the period of 2003 and 2004.

It said the provision of the insecticide Treated Nets is part of the strong partnership between the Government of Japan and UNICEF Ghana, which aims at reducing malaria.
