GUBA British Service To Ghana Award Winner: Anthony Pile

Entrepreneur Anthony Pile will receive a British Service to Ghana Award at the GUBA Awards on the 4 ^th July 2015. The Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards - taking place this year in the Hilton Metropole Hotel, Edgware Road, London - annually recognises and celebrates the success of Ghanaian individuals and businesses in the UK.

Pile is the founder and chairman of Blue Skies, a leading producer and supplier of sustainable fresh fruit, ethically-sourced from Ghana, Egypt, South Africa and Brazil.Pile established Blue Skies in 1997, opening its first factory in Ghana which began operating in 1998. The company has grown significantly since then and now employs 4,000 people in Africa and South America.

Blue Skies supply large retailers like Sainsbury’s and Waitrose with a diverse range of fresh fruits all year round, allowing customers to enjoyGhana’s pineapples and papayas. Importantly, Blue Skies is also very ethically-sound; it is committed to adding value at the source, allowing local farmers and factory workers to reap the deserved rewards of their work.

Blue Skies have won the Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development in 2008, 2011 and 2015, as well as a Private Business Award in recognition of its inclusive business model, the ‘Joint Effort Enterprise’.

Anthony Pile also served as a soldier in the British Army for thirteen years, worked as a magistrate and attended the postgraduate Sloan Fellowship Programme at the London Business School. His interesting career led him to be Managing Director of Orchard House Foods from 1989-1996, before embarking on his role at Blue Skies.

Pile himself has received numerous awards, such as the 2015 African Economy Builder Award, the 2012 FIRST Award for Responsible Capitalism and an honorary doctorate (MBA) from Cranfield University School of Management in 2011.

Anthony Pile will be honoured with a GUBA Black Star Award for British Service to Ghana to recognise the long-term positive impact that his innovative work has had in Ghana. The recipients of the Black Star Awards were chosen by GUBA’s advisory board; including Jon Benjamin, British High Commissioner to Ghana; John Blavo, founder of Blavo & Co Solicitors Ltd; and Jonathan Howard, CEO of the Business Council for Western and Southern Africa.

Alongside the Black Star Awards, there are three voting categories: Artist Extraordinaire Award, GUBA Humanitarian Award and GUBA Young and Talented Award. Voting for these categories can be done via http://osikiapp.com/guba/ with winners being unveiled on the night.

GUBA 2015 promises to be an entertaining and inspirational night, filled with live music, great food and a glamorous ambience.
