MORONI, Comoros, February 14, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The Union of the Comoros began participating in the International Monetary Fund's (IMF's) General Data Dissemination System (GDDS) today, marking a major step in the process of developing its national statistical system. Comprehensive information on the Union of the Comoros' statistical production and data dissemination practices now appears on the IMF's Dissemination Standards Bulletin Board (http://dsbb.imf.org/Applications/web/gdds/gddscountrylist/).

“Adopting the Fund's General Data Dissemination System as a framework for developing its national statistics system shows the commitment of the Union of the Comoros to implementing international best practices, and will help us to produce and disseminate more reliable and timely statistics,” commented Ms. Alfeine S. Soifiat Tadjiddine, General Commissioner for Planning of the Union of the Comoros.

Mr. Alfredo Leone, Acting Director of the IMF's Statistics Department, welcomed the participation of the Union of the Comoros in the GDDS, and noted: “The participation of the Union of the Comoros in the GDDS is a major milestone in the country's statistical development. I am confident that the Union of the Comoros will benefit from using the framework that the GDDS provides for the development of its statistical system.”

The GDDS was established by the IMF in 1997. It provides a framework to help countries develop their statistical systems to produce comprehensive and accurate statistics for policymaking and analysis. Comoros is the 106th GDDS participant (excluding the countries that have graduated from the GDDS to the Special Data Dissemination Standard).
