CHRAJ boss resignation is long overdue – Vitus Azeem

The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has added its voice to calls for Mrs. Laurretta Vivian Lamptey, the Commissioner for the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice to either relinquish her post or give up her board membership with Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB).

The Commissioner has come under criticism from lawyers who accuse her of breaching Article 222 of the constitution which prohibits a commissioner from holding any other public office.

Advocacy group Centre for National Affairs (CNA) has given her 24 hours to give up her post or face court action.

Mr. Vitus Azeem, Executive Director of Ghana Integrity Initiative also said Mrs. Lamptey's resignation has been long overdue since it is a direct violation of the law.

'I think it is a straight forward matter and it should not have been allowed to get this far. Article 222 says the Commissioner cannot hold any other office. 

“She is equal to an Appeals Court judge and a judge of that level cannot hold any other post,' he argued.

Speaking on  Joy FM  on Tuesday Mr. Azeem said the CHRAJ boss should have been properly advised upon appointment to immediately give up her post as a board member of GCB. 

The CHRAJ Commissioner has since defended her membership on the GCB board saying that her dual position has in no way affected her responsibilities.
