DAVID CAMERON STANDS AS THE STRONG MAN OF EUROPE

If what Merkel says is true, he has just displayed the most guts of any British PM since Churchill.

The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, took a decisive step to distance Britainfrom the European Union on Friday as he became the first Prime Minister to veto a new EU treaty.

Mr. Cameron provoked widespread anger among European leaders by refusing to back a deal to rescue the Eurozone, delighting Tories and raising questions about Britain's future in the EU.

After Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, led objections to his “unacceptable” demands for legal protections for the City of London, the British Prime Minister refused to give Britain's backing for a new treaty to create a “fiscal union” among Eurozone members.

The European Council of 8-9 December, dominated by right-wing political power plays, never brought any good news for the people of Europe. The powers-that-be tried to impose and institutionalize harsher austerity measures in this so-called “fiscal compact” which is far from being a comprehensive plan enabling the EU to get out of the crisis. The key concepts of growth and solidarity are glaringly absent. This deal is a total swindle by bankers. No more investor responsibility, Taxpayers will pay the profits to bankers and speculators. It compounds the problems by piling more debt on the fiscally irresponsible. No one's talking about investment in the deficit-strapped countries to prelaunch growth and employment, or upping wages or other measures in the north that would reduce trade surpluses and give the south a fighting chance. Democracy and sovereignty are crushed.

However, Cameron didn't veto anything; he hasn't stopped the other 26 from doing their own thing.

Cameron has made a bold statement and has made the British proud of their ancestry. Well done, Cameron! Not only for your country, but especially for democracy! I haven't agreed or shared Cameron's participation in the war against Ghaddafi 's government, but his opposition to this way of getting, or rather forcing, a New Treaty to give more power to German and French heads of State, is very important! Not only for British people, but also for Europeans of other countries that are not okay with "yes sir" for a fiscal integration.

He isn't standing on his own either; as long as he doesn't backtrack. He needs nobody else's approval other than the majority of the British people. He need not court the soft left or the Europeans.

However, he stopped short of mentioning the referendum clauses of both parties, earlier saying that the prevalent EU Treaty could not be revoked while the Liberal Democrats denying that it was ever on their manifesto. He was not prepared to give a commitment to hold a referendum. Perhaps that would break the First Law of Electoral dynamics, which is 'never let the voters have a say on Europe'.

Given the events since the general election in May 2010, I don't believe that any of the Lib Dems who sit in the coalition government have any moral courage left. They have abandoned the manifesto commitments they made last year upon which they received massive support from the electorate; that of holding a referendum on the EU.

A snap online poll on the European vote shows support for David Cameron's decision at 57% with 14% disagreeing and 29% undecided. 53% also agreed that the vote showed that Cameron is willing to stand up for Britain. Depending on how you gauge it, in favour of the decision there is a range and the lowest stated is 57% with 85% being the highest.

It is the only country which knows how to care for its own interests and has had the courage to defy Germany's striving for the power over Europe. Only stupid leaders from some other countries seem to be unable to see all this in a proper light, or maybe they do and they only pretend to be stupid.

Of course, Miliband and Clegg can weep for their pals in Brussels, I don't hear them weeping for the British public who have been calling for a referendum on the EU since they were subsumed by it.

Clegg is biased in favour of the EU. Doesn't he enjoy an EU pension and isn't his wife employed by the EU for £500,000 pounds a year? There's is a name for people like Nick Clegg who would sell out their own country. How many such traitors do we have in Malta?

One thing that you have to concede is that Britainhas a massive advantage over all the members of the Eurozone, and that is a flexible exchange rate. This is the cause of the woes in the zone and something that those members can only dream about.

We should beware of any scheme tending to cede too much power

over many diverse peoples to too few autocrats in an inaccessible centralised stronghold.

If anyone is ignorant of who Jean Monet is, I'm sure most of our MEPs can help out!

There is simply no alternative but for every nation in Europe, to exit this EU insanity as soon as possible. Each of the nations is going to have to spend a fair few years dedicated to cleaning this cancer out of each society's political and social infrastructure.

The people of Europe deserve much better than the shower of selfish garbage that is the EU.
