WANT A N/A RESOLUTION FORMALLY RECOGNIZING JONATHAN AS ACTING PRESIDENT.
Abuja Feb 05, (THEWILL) – Nigerian state governors on Friday paid an unscheduled visit to Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to convey the resolution of the Governors' Forum, which endorsed him as acting president.
24 Governors including the chairman of the powerful forum, Bukola Saraki were in a meeting with Mr. Jonathan for about 30 minutes at the villa.
Speaking to the media after their visit, Saraki said the governors were fully behind the vice president as acting president and have resolved to meet with the national assembly to work out a resolution recognizing him as acting president.
"We associate ourselves with the court rulings that have been given recently on the constitutional issue regarding the President and the Vice President. We also resolved that the Vice President has been acting admirably going by some of the actions that have so far been taken.
"Also, we have now agreed to meet with the leadership of the national assembly to urge them to pass a resolution, recognizing the Vice President as the acting president in the interest of moving the nation forward,'' he added.
When asked whether the national assembly could pass a resolution without a letter from the ailing president, he said yes, they could and would, in the interest of the nation.
Cross Rivers State Governor, Liyel Imoke, also commented on the matter saying the governors acted so that there would be no vacuum at the head of the executive.
"We believe that at this point in time it is necessary that appropriate action be taken and solution be found to what appears to be a problem of existence of a vacuum.
"I don't share the view that a vacuum exists because the Vice President, clearly, had the same number of votes as the President. Those who insist on the existence of a vacuum do not understand why the Constitution insists that the President and Vice President should run on the same ticket.
"Section 145 has been interpreted by the court; it starts with the words,`whenever the President transmits a letter'. In the event that the transmission does not occur, certain action can be taken to guarantee the stability of the nation and that is what we have just done,'' Imoke explained.
Other governors at the meeting were: Timpreye Sylva, Bayelsa; Namadi Sambo, Kaduna; Aliyu Akwe-Doma, Nasarawa; Babangida Aliyu, Niger; Sullivan Chime, Enugu; Murtala Nyako, Adamawa; Segun Oni, Ekiti; Theodore Orji, Abia; Martins Elechi, Ebonyi; Ali Modu Sheriff, Borno; Isa Yuguda, Bauchi; Adams Oshiomole, Edo; Aliyu Wamakko, Sokoto; Usman Dakkigyari, Kebbi; Danjuma Goje, Gombe; Ibrahim Shema, Katsina; and Godswill Akpabio, Akwa Ibom.
On Thursday, an aide of the ailing leader, Mohammed Abba-Aji said the president may write the national assembly soon after considering its resolution and court orders on his long absence.
On Wednesday, information minister, Dora Akunyili broke ranks with the Executive Council of the Federation when she tendered a memo urging the council to act, so that the vice president can become acting president.
Nigerian president, Musa Yar'Adua has not been seen in public since November 23, 2009, and has refused to transfer power to the vice president.
