Nigerian actress Rita Dominic has called for actors across Africa to receive royalties payments for their work.

In an interview with Accra-based Joy FM, Dominic highlighted how many veteran actors currently struggle financially despite their roles in popular films that continue earning revenues through streaming and reruns.

Dominic believes implementing a royalty system would help address this issue and provide better long-term support for African acting talents.

“It will be nice for actors in Africa to have their royalties so that way people are not struggling when they get older, which has been the challenge in the industry for some old actors," Dominic told Joy FM.

The 48-year-old actor, known for roles in over 50 Nollywood films over two decades, argued it is unfair that actors pour their skills and efforts into projects but see little return as those works continue generating revenue through various distribution channels.

A fair system of royalties paid to the original cast and crew could help provide financial security later in life, she remarked.

"They have been struggling financially and that shouldn't be so. These are people who have done major films, been involved in major films and all that and then all of a sudden when they are old, they are struggling financially.

“Meanwhile, their films are still being played on YouTube, on all these platforms and they are even getting royalties or getting monies from them," she said.
