The second edition of the Under 15 years Community Schools Marathon takes place in Dansoman, known to be the biggest residential estate in West Africa.
It is being organized by Dreamland Sports Plus and some private basic schools in the community.
Emmanuel Olla Williams, CEO of Dreamland who organized the Festival of Relay Races in Cape Coast, and known for his sports events management skills said this programme is the allow the kids to have interest in long-distance races and tap talents for Ghana.
He said the 5-kilometre race is supported by Kiddy Pak, Parle Biscuits, Kasapreko Royal Drinks, Ice Joy and Paradise Pac mineral water. He expressed gratitude to the companies who support the less financed sports in Ghana.
According to Olla Williams who doubles as the youth coordinator of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), although athletics is not popular in Accra of late, he cannot sit down to watch the kids engage in worthless activities, so he decided to put up the marathon for kids, and after a successful programme last year, the community is demanding a second edition.
He said the race will start from St. Martin De Porres School and end at Ave Maria School.
“We will certainly award the best kid athletes with medals and sponsors products and after identifying them, we shall link them to the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) for grooming” he expressed.
“It is a holiday and we expect more kids to come out and run to keep fit and cultivate healthy living lifestyle” he added.
