Vincent Torgah Wins UMB Accra Open Golf Tournament

Mr Vincent Torgah of the Tema Golf Club produced a four-day stunning performance to win the top prize at the 2017 UMB Accra Open Championship, held at the Achimota Golf Club in Accra.

The 18-hole tournament featured seasoned golfers across the country and the West African sub-region.

Torgah, grossed 280 to beat Emos Korblah and Olapade who were first and second runners-up, respectively.

In the senior ladies category, Peace Akewi came first with a net score of 85, Helen Appah placed second with 87 net, whereas, in the ladies scratch, Felicity Okyei Gyeabour, Jessica Tei and L. Amponsah Mensah grossed 166, 170 and 174; placing first, second and third, respectively.

In the men's scratch category, Kofi Yeboah of the Tafo Golf Club, Frank Avorsey representing Achimota Golf Club and Alfred Kwame also from Tafo Golf Club placed first, second and third with a gross score of 147, 151 and 154, respectively.

Avorsey and Max Prah were winners in the Longest Drive category for males, whiles Rubabat Oseni and L. Amponsah Mensah emerged as winners for the Longest Drive category for females.

Speaking to the GNA Sports, Mr John Awuah, UMB Chief Executive Officer, described the tournament as the premier golf event in Ghana and noted that it was a privilege to partner with the Achimota Golf Club to promote the sport.

He said golf teaches one to be focused, strategic and dedicated and these are skills that are important to succeed in business.

Mr Awuah said that the game provides a platform to network and to make meaningful connections with customers and key business partners.

Mr Torgah, the winner of the tournament, in an interview, said that one of the things that allow a professional to win tournaments is the mental aspect of golfing.

He noted that he had been busy touring Africa and returning to win in Ghana was a meaningful accomplishment.

He would soon compete on another bigger stage, playing among the best 32 countries in the world.

Mr Torgah called on the government to use sports, particularly golf to keep children and the youth off the streets. He commented that "let's involve the youth, develop their interest and this could help them to earn a living'.
