Kofi Jumah Arrested
04.10.2014 LISTEN

Jamel Agha and Maxwell Kofi Jumah
FORMER MEMBER of Parliament (MP) for Asokwa in Kumasi, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, was arrested by the police in Kumasi Friday morning over an allegation that he led a group of people to manhandle one Jamal Agha, who he (Jumah) accused of stealing his mobile phone.

Agha, who sustained severe injuries following the alleged physical attack on his body in the residence of the ex-Kumasi Mayor, lodged a complaint with the police on Thursday.

The victim displayed marks of assault on his body to the police when he visited the station and he was issued a medical form to seek treatment.

Confirming the arrest to D AILY GUIDE , ASP Mohammed Yussif Tanko, the Ashanti Regional Police PRO, said the police picked the top politician from his residence Friday morning to write his statement.

According to ASP Tanko, Mr Jumah on Friday morning granted an interview to an Accra-based radio station where he confirmed the assault charge that Agha had accused him of.

He said the police took Mr Jumah's action as an act of impunity and total disregard for the rule of law, adding that the former MP's behaviour was also an affront to the authority of the police.

ASP Tanko intimated that the police therefore set aside an earlier invitation that it had extended to Mr Jumah and went to his house to apprehend him to assist in their investigations.

Mr Jumah was still in police custody assisting in investigation as at the time that this report was being filed.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) virtually turned the police headquarters in Kumasi into their office on Friday following the arrest of the former Asokwa MP- who is a member of the party.

Top party officials in Kumasi were spotted standing in groups at vantage points at the headquarters, discussing the arrest of their colleague.

Among them were Sam Pyne, the Regional Secretary and Lawyer Kwame Adom Appiah.
