> Addy To Defend WBO Title In US

Ghana's WBO inter-continental bantamweight champion, Lante Addy, leaves for the United States this week to defend his title against Nicaraguan Bismark Alfaro on Friday, August 8.

The bout, fixed for the Hyatt Regency Hotel in St Louis, Missouri, in the United States, will be the third for the champion since winning the title and his first defence of the crown.

“I cannot let the title slip away. It is a treasured asset and I will defend it not only for myself, but also for the entire nation,” Addy told the Graphic Sports.

On December 26, 2007, Addy scored a unanimous points victory over compatriot Isaac Nettey in Accra to clinch the belt, but has since lost twice, including a bid for the Commonwealth title.

British boxer, Jason Booth, retained his Commonwealth title on March 7, this year, when he outpointed the Ghanaian on his way to winning a unanimous point-decision at the Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre in Nottingham, UK.

Just this month, Addy risked a late-arranged fight and lost by a unanimous point-decision to Kiko Martinez at the National Basketball Arena in Dublin, Ireland, early this month.

In spite of all these setbacks, Addy insisted that he had the quality to retain his title.

“Various circumstances worked against me in the two bouts and I have put them behind me. A different story will be told on August 8,” he said.

“I know almost nothing about Alfaro. I haven't seen him fight nor seen a clip of his fights, but it makes no difference. We are both boxers and we are both bantamweights.

“I have my title at stake and the nation's pride as well. These are the factors that matter and these are what motivate me for the day. I cannot fail the nation,” he assured.

While Addy has faltered in recent fights, Alfaro has been on the rise, avenging a third round knockout loss to Juan Alvarez with an eight-round unanimous decision in March last year and then scoring a first round knockout victory over Jose Rizo. He has never fought outside Nicaragua.
