Boxing Make boxers career paramount - Agbeko tells GBA
DEC 1, 2021 LISTEN

Former International Boxing Federation (IBF) bantamweight champion, Joseph ‘King Kong’ Agbeko, has called on the new leadership of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to make careers of boxers paramount to help them flourish.

Agbeko said the GBA needed to put in place measures to bar promoters and managers from taking advantage of boxers for their selfish interests.

Boxers continue to complain about decisions of the GBA regarding managerial disputes which usually go against them.

However, in an interview with the Graphic Sports, the 44-year-old boxer noted that boxers had only the sport to survive unlike managers and promoters who were mostly businessmen with financial clout.

Agbeko said boxers could only have their peace of mind to perform if they had the right team behind them.

“I want to make a passionate appeal to the GBA to consider our careers whenever they are taking a decision because that may affect us.

“Most of the decisions on managerial and promotional outfits usually don’t go in our favour and I want them to note that it goes a long way to destroy so many careers,” he stressed.

“I believe the GBA can do something about it by putting in place measures which will prevent managers and promoters from taking advantage of us”.

Agbeko is yet to fight since knocking out Albert Commey in a contest last December.
