As football always goes with history and antecedent, it will not be infelicitous to look at some records that have stood for some decades as we zoom in to what has been touted ‘a season to watch’ of the forthcoming Ghana Premier League. Below are the records:
- Highest total home wins in a season is 159 wins out of 240 games and that was in 2014/15, representing 66.3%.
- Lowest total home wins in a season is 118 wins out of 240 games and that was in 2012/13, representing 49.2%.
- Highest total draws in a season is 75 draws out of 240 games and that was in 2011/12, representing 31.3%.
- Lowest total draws in a season is 49 draws out of 240 games and that was in 2001 & 2005/06, representing 20.4%.
- Highest total away wins in a season is 55 wins out of 240 games and was in 2012/13, representing 22.9%.
- Lowest total away wins in a season is 25 wins out of 240 games and that was 2014/15, representing 10.4%.
- Highest total goals scored in a season are 530 (2.21 per game) goals and that were in 2000 & 2017.
- Highest wins in a season by a club is 25 wins out of 30 matches and it was done by Hearts of Oak in 2002.
- Highest winning streak in a season is 14 wins and that was done by Hearts of Oak in 2002.
- Highest home wins by a club is 14 wins out of 15 home matches and it was done by Hearts of Oak 2001, 2002 & Kotoko 2007/08.
- Highest away wins by a club is 11 wins out of 15 away matches and it was done by Hearts of Oak in 2002.
- Lowest points used to win the league is 51 points and it was done by Wa All stars now Legon Cities in 2016.
- Lowest number of wins to win the league is 14 wins out of 30 matches it was done by Kotoko in 2013/14.
- Hearts of Oak is the only side to go unbeaten without winning the league in 2003. They had 66 points (18w, 12d) and scored 45 goals, conceding 12 in their basket.
With the 2020/21 league underway, will there be more away wins looking at the 25% quota given by the government due to covid-19? Will there be more goals? Only time will tell.
