Listen to article

Nkawie (Ash), Dec 12, GNA - An educationist has called for the adoption of science, mathematics and technology as the basis for achieving sustainable development. Mr Eddy Obeng-Darko, the Atwima-Nwabiagya District Director of Education, said the most developed and rich countries actively promoted science, mathematics and technology to generate their national wealth. Inaugurating the Atwima-Nwabiagya District Mathematics Association at Nkawie last Friday, he said mathematics and science had always been the basis of wealth creation in agriculture, manufacturing, industry and the exploitation of natural resources to enhance the living standard of citizens.

"The capacity of these subjects to change a person's attitude to accept new ways of doing things in order to improve his or her quality of life cannot be over-emphasised", he said. Mr Obeng-Darko said the content and delivery of mathematics and science education should have positive impact on the development of students, especially girls. Mr Thomas Takyi, an Assistant Director of Education in-charge of second-cycle institutions, told members of the association to be ambassadors for the crusade to wipe away the myth surrounding mathematics and science. He said statistics at the directorate indicate an encouraging increase in the number of students, especially girls, who offer mathematics and science.
