Acting VC Of UEW Reveals The University Making Gains Despite Legal Challenges

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, Prof. Father Anthony Afful-Broni, has told Citi News the legal challenges his administration is facing has not affected the administration of the institution.

Prof Afful-Broni has assured that contrary to the perception that the legal struggles may have crippled the university’s administration, the institution is rather flourishing.

The acting vice-Chancellor gave the assurance on Friday in an interview with Citi News at the signing of an agreement between the University and the people of Efutu.

“I am saying to you on authority that last year when we counted 29,000 applicants for admission, we got excited because we had never seen anything like that before; guess what, when all of this hullabaloo has happened, we have strangely recorded over 40,000 applicants (this year), so what is it that makes a chaotic place have more students wanting to come?”, Prof. Afful-Broni quizzed.

He said the institutions' sandwich intake increased by 68% compared to last, adding that “we have over GHC 200 million worth of contracts taking place, eight of them, on campus simultaneously, that is unprecedented, and in addition, we are building eight more pavilions, each one having 550 capacity”.

The University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the traditional leaders of Efutu, led by the Paramount Chief of Efutu Traditional Council, Neenyi Ghartey VII, and leaders of stakeholder groups in Efutu.

The deal was witnessed by the Member of Parliament for Efutu, Alex Afenyo Markins, the Municipal Chief Executive, John B. Ninson and past Members of Parliament.

Under the MOU the institution will increase its corporate social responsibilities while the people of Efutu help sustain the peace and development of the area and the University.

Meanwhile, Prof. Fr. Afful-Broni also declared support for the government’s Free Senior High School and Double Track System policies.

The core mandate of the University of Education, Winneba is to train teachers, mostly for the pre-university level, and the Acting VC acknowledges, “When you have Free, Compulsory Basic Education, it only goes far; it is senior high school education that will propel you to go for tertiary education where becoming more independent and skilled is going to be achieved”.
