The Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia constituency in the Ashanti region, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, led his constituents to embark on a massive cleanup exercise at the Manhyia Palace and its surroundings, on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, towards the 19th anniversary celebration on the ascension to the Golden Stool by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The exercise, which started around six in the morning, took them around the streets around the Manhyia Palace, with both the members and residents in the constituency, sweeping and distilling gutters, with their brooms, rakes and shovels, with some clothed in the party colours.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, ascended to the Golden Stool on the April 26, 1999, after the death of his brother ,Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, which made him the 16th occupant to the throne.

The anniversary also marks the 68th birthday of the King of Ashanti, who was born on May 6, 1950.

The Manhyia MP, who is also the Education Minister, speaking in an interview with the media after the exercise said the cleanup “is to give it a clean environment ahead of the 19th anniversary of His Majesty ascension to the Golden Stool that also coincides with his birthday, so the cleanup exercise is to give it a fitting siren environment for the celebrations ahead.”

New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Manhyia Napo, as he is affectionately called, charged the public to keep their environs clean as their responsibilities, leading to healthy environments and good health.

“Keeping the environment clean is a personal responsibility of everyone to keep his or her immediate environ clean. You cannot live in filth and hope to get better out of it, if you live to surround yourself with filth, your mind will be full of filth and your utterances and actions will be full of filths. That is why it is extremely important that this issue of indiscriminately disposal of wastes in our environments should be stopped for the good health of all,” he noted.
