Yendi Witches Camp Benefits From Cataract Surgery Project

Nine inmates of the Gnani-Tindang Witches Camp in the Yendi Municipality are to undergo a free cataract surgery to preserve and restore their sight.

A community outreach conducted at the camp to fish out people with eye defects showed the nine out of 16 had eye problems, which required surgeries to correct, whiles others were assisted with free medications to improve their sight.

The Swiss Red Cross (SRC) and the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) in partnership with the Ghana Health Service have constituted a team of medical personnel to perform the surgeries scheduled for December 16, this year, to preserve and restore the sight of the alleged witches at the Camp.

Mr Thomas Oyugi Okollah, Country Coordinator of SRC, who witnessed the outreach programme at the Gnani-Tindang Witches Camp, said partners would continue to conduct frequent screening at the camp to ensure that all, who had eye defects, received treatment.

Since 2010, through the intervention of SRC and GRCS, over 300 alleged witches at the Camp received free cataract surgeries amongst other medications to improve their sight.

Mr Okollah assured that SRC would continue investing in the planning for effective eye health in the country.

Members of the camp expressed appreciation to the SRC and GRCS for extending the eye care outreach programme to them, to help improve their sight.
