Health Run For A Cure Africa Ghana Set To Hold Annual 5km Breast Cancer Awareness Run In Accra
SEP 25, 2017 LISTEN

Run For a Cure Africa (RFCA) Ghana is set to hold its annual breast cancer awareness and fundraising run on Saturday 30th September 2017. The run will start from the Lincoln Community School, Abelemkpe.

The annual 5km breast cancer and awareness walk/run is inspired by the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer. RFCA Ghana’s annual event, has now become a traditional event in Ghana, bringing hundreds of enthusiastic participants of all ages, from all walks of life. Speaking to the media on the event, Director of RFCA Ghana, Milagros Mensah said, ‘This event is open to everyone. Our aim is to raise awareness, celebrate survivors and honor those who have fought the disease’.

RFCA is a nonprofit organization that has been working for the eradication of breast cancer in Ghana for the past five years. The organization’s aim is to create a greater awareness of breast cancer throughout Ghana through education that erases societal stigmas, and by forming strategic alliances. RFCA Ghana provides free screenings to women in impoverished communities and bears the cost of treatment. RFCA is also involved in donating mammogram machines to selected hospitals in Ghana and has recently donated mammogram machines to the St. Martin de Pores Hospital, Ekwe in the western Region and Sacred Heart Catholic Hospital, Abor in the Volta Region. The success stories of Ghanaian women and communities who have benefitted from the contribution of the organization are numerous.

Run For a Cure Africa Ghana’s uniqueness in the health sector lies in its thorough approach to managing breast cancer issues. The organization creates awareness through community education, identifies women who need support and take them through the various stages to provide support for breast cancer issues. The organization also does not underscore the need to provide psychological support for patients who are diagnosed and those who undergo treatment.

Breast cancer remains a common cancer among women in Ghana and across the world. Breast Cancer is 98% treatable if detected early. Late stage breast cancer detection in Ghana and for that matter Africa, is attributed to the negative social stigma of the disease in society, lack of awareness, education, and access to health services. Studies in Ghana show that fear of the disease is linked to death in most cases, denial and guilt, as well as superstitious attributes.
