The Jury System has outlived its usefulness--- Lawyer
16 SEP 2017 LISTEN

Lawyer, Researcher, Author, and a Public Speaker Daniel Korang has said the jury system of law has lived with us since we had our independence from our colonial masters and there hasn’t been any changes.

Research shows that the jury system is of no use to the country. Cases are being given to the juries without any law background and as a lawyer looking at the way the cases are being handled its horrific, has said

He made these statements at the launch of his 2Law books during the Annual Ghana Bar Association (GBA) Conference in Sunyani.

Lawyer Korang of Adom Legal Consult on the 4th floor of the cocoa house sunyani has launched 2 Law books namely Criminal Prosecution in Ghana, Practice and procedure and the Jury trial in Ghana, Exposition and Critique.

Throwing more light on the books, Lawyer Korang said looking the aim of the criminal Prosecution in Ghana, Practice and Procedure, sometimes the police arrests and charges for flawing the laws of Ghana, from the arrest to the court then to judgment what actually transpires is what we call the human right of the accused person.

The law permits the accused person to hire a lawyer, before interrogation, the court also gives you some time to prepare your defense. There are so many things the law permits for the accused person but we don’t see these human right proceeding.

On the other hand the Jury trial in Ghana, Exposition and Critique, in a murder case the law permits that after judgment if found guilty he/she can be killed but the judgment does not come from the judges rather the jurors.

The jurors are person made up of 7 who are not lawyers and without any law background then forms a penal for the hearing of a murder case.

The books are available across all the courts in the country.

Speaking on the theme “-“Saving the Future Generation from the Scourge of Corruption and Environmental Hazards: The Role of the Legal Profession” it’s a shared responsibility of every Ghanaian to protect the country from corruption and environmental degradation but not only lawyers.
