FEB 10, 2016 LISTEN

As part of the corporate social responsibility activities of the Export Trade, Agricultural and Industrial Development Fund (EDAIF), the Fund has made donations to some and deprived public schools across the country. The donations were earmarked for the provision of hospital equipment for the health facilities and the rehabilitation of identifiable infrastructure for the schools.

Under the current EDAIF CSR support programme, the organisation has donated GHC 12,000.00 each to the Kweikuma M/A Primary and JHS, and the Mpohor Health Centre. These donations were aimed at improving teaching and learning in deprived communities and contributing to effective health delivery, respectively.

In her welcome address, Madam Gloria Quansah, headmistress of the Kweikuma M/A Primary and JHS gave a brief history of the challenges the school is currently facing. Established in 1963, it was the only school that served pupils from Adiembra, the hospital area and wards of doctors from Effiankwanta Hospital. In the 90s, encroachers took over part of a stream that flowed through the school, causing undue damage to the landscape. This situation gave rise to flooding after every heavy rainfall. This, coupled with the damage to the buildings resulted in parents withdrawing their wards.

Since 2013, whenever there is heavy rain, the school has to close. Authorities of the school have been making several requests for help from corporate institutions, non-governmental and government institutions, including EDAIF. Fortunately for them, EDAIF responded positively to their call. She expressed appreciation to EDAIF for the support.

Making the presentation Mr Suleman Ibrahim, Director, Finance and Administration expressed his understanding of the situation. He indicated that this is EDAIF’s first engagement with the school and would consider further assistance in future. He said EDAIF provides finance to exporters. However, the organisation also recognises the need to reach out to the community.

At the Mpohor Health Centre, EDAIF presented another cheque of GHC 12,000. Giving a brief statement on the state of the facility, the District Director of Health Services, Madam Marion Oko Owusu, said the District became fully operational in December 2014. They have been providing normal OPD and maternity services. According to the Director, several problems hamper the progress of the centre.

The biggest challenge, however, is the plumbing works at the centre. This makes the disposal of blood after delivery a big challenge. This is what prompted the proposal to EDAIF. She indicated that the current support provided by EDAIF is timely and will go a long way to turn the situation around.

Madam Oko Owusu was also hopeful that the donation will help them to uplift the general outlook of the facility. For example, currently most of consulting rooms are using linoleum. Hence, whenever there is spillage, it is very difficult to control infections. Some of the funding will be used to tile the floors. Ultimately, the managers of the facility are working towards upgrading its status to a polyclinic. EDAIF’s donation, according to the Director, will go a long way to help achieve this objective by December 2016 as planned.

In his address, Mr Suleman Ibrahim highlighted the importance of the facility within the district. He again stressed EDAIF’s resolve to go out of their main pre-occupation of export finance to extend a helping hand to the community. This donation, according to Mr Ibrahim, is the beginning of more help to come.
