AngloGold Ashanti closes down illegal mining pits

Obuasi, Nov 17, GNA-A combined team of the Police and personnel of the Special Services Division (SSD) of AngloGold Ashanti in Obuasi, have sealed up pits being mined by illegal miners, popularly called Galamsey operators.

Mr Francis Asare-Danquah, the acting head of the SSD, who briefed journalists about the exercise said: "This is about the fourth time those illegal pits have been sealed off".

He warned that any illegal miner found operating in that area would be arrested and prosecuted.
