The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, last week held a financial management symposium for students and members of the general public.
Under the auspices of the fundraising committee of the SRC led by the SRC Treasurer, Felix Atsu Ackuayi, the symposium educated both undergraduates of the university and members of the community (especially miners) about financial management.
The programme was attended by many including bankers, students, miners and lecturers. Speakers at the programme included Dr. Charles Mensah, Hon Seth E. Tekper, Deputy Minister of Finance; Kofi Owusu Nhyirah, CEO FORThought Ghana; and Kafui Dey host of Who Wants To Be Rich. It was chaired by Mrs. Mawuena Dumor Trebrah,Chief Business Strategist Inspire Africa Consult Ltd.
A statement issued by the SRC P.R.O, Nana Nyan Abraham, said the objective of the programme was to provide an alternative view into the wide spread of opportunities as potential future leaders and possible challenges to be faced by them in terms of finances.
“After several years of the existence of both mining companies and the university, the canker of overspending and mismanagement of salary or funds has affected the old and the young. And we, as concerned stakeholders of both Ghana's economy and our own future thought it wise to organize this program to educate the students and the public about this critical Economic issue(s) that affects us all.”
The theme for the symposium was: “Prudent Financial Management – A Tool for Financial Independence.”
