The National Executive Committee of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended its Deputy General Secretary Kofi Adams.

The decision was taken at a crunch meeting by the NEC on Thursday in Accra.

Mr Adams who is also the aide to former President Jerry John Rawlings has been accused of plotting with the opposition New Patriotic Party to cause the defeat of the government in the December general elections.

A leaked tape with a voice purported to be that of Mr Adams was heard saying he will do everything possible to prevent President Mills from securing the mandate of Ghanaians for a second term.

He was alleged to have had that phone conversation with the Executive Director of the Danquah Institute, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, after the NDC Sunyani Congress held last year, where his boss' wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, lost the party's presidential slot to President John Mills.

Meanwhile, Mr Kofi Adams, who spoke to Joy News even before official communication of his suspension was made to him, said the action "has no basis".

“In my case I indicated clearly that it is not my voice, the person alleged to be on the other side of the phone… doubts if that is my voice.”

He remarked that if the leadership of the party would take a decision before “authentication” of the tape is done, “so be it”.

The failure of the party to authenticate the veracity of the tape before taking that decision indicates that “we are in true, true good times”, he intimated.

Mr Adams disclosed his intention to resort to the courts for redress.

“But I am also seeking legal remedy…to clear my name and my reputation.”

He suspected that the decision to suspend was based on his close association with the former first family – the Rawlingses.
