Obafemi Awolowo University wins hockey trophy


Kumasi, June 24, GNA - The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) at Ile-Ife of Nigeria beat University of Cape Coast (UCC) 2-0 to take the gold in the men's hockey finals at the on-going West Africa Universities Hockey and Soccer championships at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi on Friday.

The two goals from John Agbaje and Gabriel Emordi in the 16th and 49th minutes were all that the OAU needed to clinch the victory. On their way to the finals, OAU beat University of Education, Winneba (UEW) 3-1 in the semi-finals while UCC won silver trophy when they accounted for KNUST 2-1. In the third place match, KNUST beat UEW 3-2 to win the bronze.

The KNUST women however emerged the overall champions with five points and five goals to win the trophy while UCC placed second with five points and three goals and University of Ghana (UG), Legon placed third with four points and five goals. KNUST, UCC, UG and Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOA), Nigeria all qualified for the semi-finals.
