Stephenson revealed he would leave the Pacers on Twitter and thanked them for an "incredible experience" after he was drafted by Indiana in 2010.

The 23-year-old had the best season of his career in 2013/14, helping the Pacers top the Eastern Conference in the regular season, before they lost the conference final series 4-2 to the Miami Heat.

The sometimes volatile Stephenson averaged 35.3 minutes per game last season, with an average of 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists per match - all career highs.

"Indy, I had a great four years," Stephenson wrote on Twitter.

"Thank you [Indiana Pacers president] Larry Bird, the fans, my coaches and teammates for the incredible experience. I will never forget any of you!

"I now have to look to the next phase of my career and the wonderful opportunity to continue to grow as a player and as a person in Charlotte! I'm excited to play for this franchise and the fans!!"

Stephenson's agent Alberto Ebanks denied his client had chosen Charlotte for more money, arguing the shooting guard had wanted more flexibility in the new contract.

Indiana had reportedly offered a five-year contract at US$8.8million per season, while it is understood the Hornets tendered a bid US$9m for the next three years.

"While we tried our best to come to the best possible terms for both sides, there was not sufficient flexibility in the terms of the contract, particularly the length of the contract," Ebanks said in a statement.

"Reports throughout the negotiation process with Indiana have often strayed from the truth but suffice it to say that it was less about the money.

"Lance will miss the city, the team and the mentor who helped transform him into the dynamic player he has become. He looks forward to making a strong contribution and beginning a new chapter with the Charlotte Hornets."
