Paralympic: Ghana Wins 11 medals
The National Paralympic team returned home from South Africa, after their stupendous performance at this year's International Paralympic Committee qualifying series last Wednesday.
They were met on arrival by the National Supporters Union led by David Langabel and some National Sports Council officials.The competition which saw 16 countries participating, had Ghana placing ninth.
The Ghanaian team brought home 11 medals, five gold, four silver and two bronze.Ghana was adjudged the overall best performing team followed by host-country South Africa.
The Minister in-charge of tertiary education, Miss Elizabeth Ohene, in a welcome address at the Accra Stadium yesterday on behalf of Hon. Rashid Bawa, congratulated the Ghanaian team for their sterling performance and lifting the flag of Ghana.
She pointed out that their outstanding performance has served as a food for thought for other national teams who are not physically challenged.Miss Ohene promised of government's support to ensure that the team is accorded the needed help for preparation towards Athens.
She further pointed out that the team should present its request on time to the government to avoid unecessary bottlenecks.The acting chairman of the National Sports Council, Mr Agbozo, in a congratulatory address indicated that the team would be given the bonus due them and would be treated equally as other national teams who win laurels for the nation.
Mr Asante, the General Secretary of National Sports Council and an official of the team, said the team would have performed better if it had arrived early in South Africa.
The captain of the team, Yaw Obeng thanked the government on behalf of his colleagues for the support and promised his team's readiness to do even better in Athens.
