Mr Samuel Bannerman-Mensah, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service on Saturday re-echoed the advantages of fame, wealth and career opportunities in sports, which sport boys and girls need to develop by organizinge their activities for their academic works, household activities and training.
The Director-General said this in an address at the closing session of the 28th edition of the Inter-Regional Basic Schools Sports Festival at the Schools and Colleges Park at Cape Coast.
“He said to be successful you need to be disciplined and committed in whatever you do so that the sky would be your limit.”
Mr Bannerman-Mensah said apart from unearthing talents at the youthful age the sports programme also supports physical education and games in schools which are vital in the quest for the total development of the child.
He said he has the hope that by taking part in the Festival the experience gained by the participants would serve as a vital and useful process for their growth.
The Director-General said there was the need for adults to “let us be committed to nurturing the talents identified among the youth so as to develop them into top level performance.
“We should not rush them into high levels of participation with the aim of making money but to help them to go through all the stages of growth and development that would lead them to maturity.”
Mr Bannerman-Mensah expressed the hope that within the next five to 10 years, a good number of the participants would develop their sporting talents to represent the country at different levels and tournaments.
He commended the Baseball Association for exhibiting the game to the participants and hoped the sport would be incorporated in the schools training programme as soon as possible.
The Director-General congratulated the athletes and the participating regions for taking part in the competition and ensuring that it was incident-free.
About 1,500 school children from the 10 regions competed for honours in soccer, volleyball, netball, table tennis, handball, athletics and cross country.
