A former Ghana international, Abubakari Damba has cautioned Black Stars coach, CK Akonnor against complacency ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations [Afcon].

Ghana cemented their 9th Afcon qualification after beating São Tomé and Principe 3-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium with Nicholas Opoku, Jordan Ayew and Baba Rahman scoring the goals.

Prior to beating São Tomé, Ghana had already booked their qualification following a 1-1 draw against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the penultimate qualifier at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

A Mohammed Kudus 48th minute solo strike was cancelled by Percy Tau on the 51st minute which sent Ghana on 10 points.

According to Damba, every country that has qualified for the 2021 AFCON can win the tournament and Ghana coach, Charles Akonnor must be aware of that.

“Every single country is a potential winner [of the 2021 AFCON].

“Every single country will have to take their own destiny into their own hands.

“Every single country tentatively can win the tournament and I choose my words carefully, can win the [2021 AFCON].

“But as to whether you have the capabilities and the abilities to do so is another ball game altogether.” Damba told Adamu Muftawu.

Ghana finished top of Group C on 13 points with Sudan who beat South Africa 2-0 in Khartoum finishing second on 12 points.

South Africa will miss the 2021 AFCON to be staged in Cameroon in January 2022 after finishing 3rd on 10 points and São Tomé bottom with no points.

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations will be hosted in Cameroon.
