Women in Engineering Ghana (WinE) is advocating for the reintroduction of woven baskets for shopping of groceries as it used to be in the olden days.

According to them, the influx of plastics and rubber bags in the society and its indiscriminate disposal is contributing to the filth that has engulfed the environment.

In an interview with Citi News on the sidelines of a clean up exercise at Nyanoa in the Upper West Akim District of the Eastern Region, Vice President of the group, Engineer Jane Narkie Tetteh Anorwie called on Ghanaians especially women to start using baskets again for shopping to help reduce rubber and plastic waste.

“We have realized that the plastic materials we use are always deposited around making the whole place unkempt and causing a lot of filth and havoc in the communities. So we are encouraging women and all Ghanaians to start using reusable plastics,” she said.

“We want to let them know that using baskets is the way to go to reduce the number of plastics that we have in the system causing a lot of damage to the environment. We all need to be mindful of our environment and surroundings by ensuring they are kept well and tidy and using baskets is the way to go,” she added.

The association also donated waste bins, wheelbarrows, brooms, and shovels to women in the community to assist them with their weekly clean up exercises.
