Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ayawaso Central Constituency and Deputy Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey, has supported the business activities of petty traders in some churches within the constituency.
The MP visited the Newtown and Kotobabi Assemblies of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana as well as the Elim Assembly Church of Pentecost and the Caprice Assembly of the Christ Apostolic Church all in Accra, where he donated an amount of Gh¢15,000 each. Each church was to identify 50 women who are engaged in petty trading to receive GH¢300 each to help boost their business.
The MP urged the beneficiaries to put the money to good use while they avoid extravagant lifestyles that would see the money diminish in no time. He stressed that the money was to help the women to have improved standards of living, without political sentiments.
The leaders and members of the churches warmly welcomed the MP and his entourage and offered prayers for them after the donation.
In an interview with DAILY GUIDE, Henry Quartey disclosed that the funds were sourced from the Common Fund from government. He said, together with his team, he visited the churches within the constituency to ascertain some of their challenges. The results indicated that most women were involved in petty trading but lacked the needed capital to sustain their business thereby making it difficult for them to make ends meet.
He therefore undertook this initiative to provide some financial support to the women to enable them sustain and improve upon their business, adding that more of such projects are on the way in the coming months.
Senior Presbyter at the Kotobabi Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Comfort Ntim Boadu, was full of excitement over the initiative. She expressed gratitude to the MP for having the church in mind.
She said the donation would go a long way to improve upon the livelihood of her members and the leadership of the Church would also do well to ensure that the monies are put to good use.
